How to use fresh greens in your holiday decor

This is a money saver so pay attention! You can (and should) use artificial greens every year as a base for your holiday décor. Save them from year to year and reuse. With artificial as your base, you can top off your holiday projects with fresh greens to give you volume, scent, and authenticity.

The reason you use artificial to start is because they don’t move. They are wired so you can use the green wrapped wire stems to hold any fresh green stems, ornaments, etc. in place, and they stay green. The fresh branches will stay green too, but just think of an artificial Christmas tree versus a fresh one. The artificial one does what you tell it to (wired branches and stems). You can wrap the wire around anything. The real tree does what it wants (they are so nice, but so obstinate).

By using the artificial greenery as a base (whether on a garland, pots, trees, bookshelves, etc.) it provides the initial shape and holds it firm. There’s nothing wrong with wanting the artificial for perfection and the real for authenticity. It makes everyone happy in the end.

Here are some helpful hints:

1_Always secure your base. For example, if it’s on a mantle or bookshelf- wire the artificial and run the wire to the wall and wrap around a nail.

2_Snap or cut off your fresh greens for the small sections. This also makes your fresh greens go further.

3_Wrap the artificial wired stems around the fresh to secure in place.

4_Almost always, think artificial first, then lights, add ornaments or objects, and top off with fresh.

With a few garlands or stems of artificial, and a box of fresh you will be amazed at what you can deck out for the holidays by just wandering around the house.
