How to decorate your chandelier (and other light fixtures)

A great way to adorn every room in the house is by addressing your lighting. Greenery swags around your outside lights capped off with a bow are very inviting, and so easy. Inside lighting? Get after your chandeliers or even your pendants.

When I was getting ready to do this blog, I was going to do my dining room chandelier, and then I thought that I should listen to my own advice to think outside my own box, and I went to the kitchen instead. I decided to do the light over my island! I’ve never done that before (Doug was thrilled).

I started with an artificial garland as the base. I love this stuff; it takes the place of wire in most cases and hides all the stems, and secures added objects. I stared at my Christmas stuff for a while and decided to grab some oversize ornaments, glittered sticks, a paper star, and some of my masquerade masks.

I began wiring in the larger pieces first. Since I was adding mass with the bigger objects, I then added the glittered sticks for length to balance the arrangement. I continued to add detail and volume with fresh greens and smaller pieces such as the snowflake, and geeeeez I’m good. Look what a cool addition this is.

The best part? Doug had to make dinner underneath me, because I was busy and this blog was due the next day! The final touch was tying in my fireplace mantle with my chandelier lighting so I added masquerade masks to both for a cohesive look.

I have done a lot of chandeliers over my years and here are some fun thoughts to get your creative juices flowing:

1_Hang ornaments together on a ribbon, string, or twine and tie on to any hanging light for a minimal holiday ornament show.

2_Loop an artificial garland on your chandelier and go find some great twigs or glitter some sticks for a more glamorous approach. Attach the naturals to the garland in whatever shape you like for your base. This makes the diameter of your light fixture appear bigger and then you can deck out with holiday birds or ornaments.

3_String bead garland around the arms of the chandelier for a dainty touch.

4_Loop angel hair or tie it into bows.

5_Adorn your kids’ chandeliers with colorful ornaments or small toys.

6_Hang mistletoe globes with ribbons.

7_Frost the tips of pine cones and pound them onto your chandelier.

8_Wrap a decorated wreath with ribbons all the way around and hang it horizontally under your light.

9_Run garlands and ribbon all the way down your kitchen pendants and top off with a big bow.

Light it up!
