How To Do Tree Toppers

So the other day, I’m shopping in a craft store and hear one woman say to the other…”do you do a star or an angel on top of your tree?” That really stopped me in my tracks. I wanted to say “Save yourself. Run….Run as fast as you can.” The idea that there are only two options for the top of your tree is like eating the same thing for dinner every night!

You can have such a great tree and it doesn’t have to stop at the top with just a star or an angel. Your tree deserves more, in fact that can be the grand finale!

I am going to give you some ideas that I have used over the years for tree toppers and the how to’s which are so easy, you will never have to stick a star or an angel with a coiled metal wire on the top branch again. In fact I think it should be illegal (not the star or the angel, but the pre-fab topper. When I’m president…illegal).

Here we go:

Grab some things you like or want to incorporate in your tree

IDEAS:

  • Large fresh or artificial greens
  • Feathers
  • Oversized ornaments
  • Bows, ribbons etc.
  • Hats – top hats
  • Letters – wood or metal
  • Antlers
  • Birds
  • Birch or branches
  • Floral or holiday stems
  • Naturals – sticks, eucalyptus, grasses, etc.
  • Wreaths
  • Pictures

STEPS:

1_If you have something that is heavy and needs to be wired in, you may want to do this first.

2_Then, starting at the top, put the highest point straight up. If it’s a feather, no problem just put it in, but if it is anything that has weight to it, you may need to wire it in or use a zip tie.

3_From there start adding outward, all the way around the tree, to give your topper volume.

4_Keep the weight of your tree topper equally distributed. If you’re one of those who only decorate the front, your tree will tip over (and I’m not going to feel sorry for you).

5_Finish it off with the details, bows, ribbon, the letters, etc. – this is where you would add that angel or star.

6_Think of it this way, you are basically making an arrangement on the top of the tree.

This is the last tree post; you’re on your own! You should have everything you need now to get that tree up and make it a statement. See you tomorrow for “Entice Me” about how to make invitations that people can’t resist!
